3 Steps to Legally Use Copyrighted Materials

When using other people's copyrighted material it is important to make sure that you are doing so legally. Here are three simple steps to ensure that you are doing so legally:

1. Find out who the original owner of the material is. If the owner did not publish the piece, the publisher should be able to connect you to the originator.

2. Contact the owner of the material (preferably via email or written letter) so that you can obtain the consent to use his or her material in written words to prove consent. Explain how you intend to use their work.

3. Provide credit to the original owner in a segment of your work to let others know that the material was used from someone else.
